Edinburgh bypass to receive emergency overnight resurfacing work after vehicle fire

Part of Edinburgh's busy A720 bypass at the Sheriffhall roundabout will be closed overnight to repair the damage caused by a recent vehicle fire.

BEAR Scotland confirmed that the westbound section between the Sheriffhall roundabout and Gilmerton junction will undergo emergency resurfacing works on the night of Friday, July 22, from 20:30 until 06:00 on Saturday.

The work is necessary after part of the road was damaged when a van caught fire earlier in the month, causing a section of the road to be closed until the blaze was extinguished, with the fire evidently causing significant damage to the road's surface.

During the closure, a signed diversion route will be in place via the A7 and A772, re-joining the A720 at Gilmerton Junction. This diversion is approximately one mile long and should add no more than five minutes onto the journey time of motorists.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These resurfacing works are necessary after a recent vehicle fire damaged the road surface.

“If you need to use the A720 westbound on the night of Friday 22 July, our advice is to be aware that restrictions will be in place and allow extra time for your journey.

‘’We thank road users and the local community for their patience and understanding.”
