Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World to shut down after nearly 40 years

Edinburgh institution Butterfly and Insect World are closing their doors for good after almost 40 years of trading.

Edinburgh Evening News confirmed the news this afternoon after a customer services official for Dobbies Garden Centres shared that the Lasswade attraction will cease trading.

The popular tourist site - and an inevitable school trip for any Edinburgh and Lothians school pupil - was the world's longest running indoor butterfly house, having opened in 1984.

As well as butterflies, the venue is home to a whole plethora of insects, beasties, reptiles and small animals.

Bosses confirmed to EEN that the 'difficult' decision had been made to close the attraction after a review of the future of the business.

The site has been shut since last lockdown following a brief reopening in August last year.

Edinburgh Live have contacted Dobbies for comment.
