Edinburgh bus driver 'scared to board bus' after rock was launched through window

An Edinburgh bus driver was left scared to even board a bus after someone launched a rock through his window.

The anonymous Lothian Buses driver said the incident had left him suffering "nightmares", and he is now seeing a counsellor in the hopes he can recover.

Whilst the physical effects of the incident soon healed, with an abrasion to his cornea treated by medics, the driver says the long term impact has been devastating.

In a video released by Lothian Buses, the driver describes the moment a young person banged on his bus before launching a rock at the vehicle.

"I automatically lent to the side, and then just as I turned back up I could see the rock coming towards my driver's window, and it just shattered.

"I was given an emergency appointment at the eye hospital the next morning, and they said 'yeah you've got some abrasions but your cornea will heal.'"

The driver thought that after he few days he'd be back to work, but explained he started to have nightmares and heard noises of incident again.

"I'm normally a very confident person but this has wiped me out. Even the thought of going on a bus is now causing me quite big problems."

He is now meeting a counsellor to hopefully recover from the trauma, and wants to highlight it to young people so they realise the impact anti-social behaviour has.

He added: "I love my job. I feel it has just destroyed me, whether it's temporarily or permanently."

After an increase in anti-social behaviour recently, Police Transport Liaison Officer, PC Mike McGill appealed for people with information to come forward.

Sarah Boyd, Operations Director, Lothian said: “Our colleagues on the frontline have the right to work without fear for their safety.

“This video highlights the true human cost that incidents of antisocial behaviour or violence can have on individuals. These mindless acts can be life-changing for everyone involved and we would appeal to anyone with information relating to these incidents to report details to Police Scotland.”
