Edinburgh briefing for October 29: Yellow weather warning, new flats, Toys "R" us returns

1. Yellow warning issued for Edinburgh

Edinburgh has been issued a yellow weather warning today by the Met Office.

Heavy rain is set to continue to pour across the city after localised flooding was spotted yesterday (October 28).

Weather warnings have been issued across Scotland, with the borders announcing a major incident and closing schools after water levels began to rise.

Following on this morning, two bridges in Annan have been washed away.

2. Edinburgh council 'change in culture' needed

A 'change in culture' is needed at Edinburgh City Council to ensure assaults and abuse committed by a senior social worker "could never happen again" after failures dating back 25 years.

Sean Bell, 58, was facing criminal charges when he was found dead near Salisbury Crags last August.

Edinburgh's Chief Executive Andrew Kerr admitted current policies in place should have stopped senior official Bell's behaviour a long time ago.

3. New development will be located on the site of the old Botanic Gardens

A derelict building will be demolished to make way for new luxury apartments on the site of the old Edinburgh Botanic Gardens.

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the proposal on Wednesday October 20 for the new development at 16 Annandale Street.

The site is on the edge of the New Town Conservation Area, at the east end of Annandale Street, in close proximity to Leith Walk.

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the application on Wednesday October 20 for the property in Trinity.

The applicant is bidding to have a ‘roof terrace, glazed sun enclosure and perimeter balustrade’ installed at their home.

The plan shows that the balustrade, or railings, around the perimeter of the terrace will be 1.1 metre high.

5. Toys "R" Us returning to high streets

Toys "R" Us looks set to make a UK comeback four years after it entered administration.

The iconic children's toy chain closed all of its 100-plus stores UK stores in 2018 after failing to find a buyer.

However, following intervention from owner WHP Global, Toys "R" Us Australia will head up the relaunch of the UK branch of the company.
