Edinburgh briefing for November 24: £14k cocaine bust, yellow weather warning, Proclaimers tour

1. Dad caught with £14,000 of cocaine

An Edinburgh man caught with £14,000 of cocaine told cops he’d been forced to ‘warehouse’ the drugs by a gang who threatened to harm his family, a court heard.

Sean McCue, 34, was addicted to crack cocaine and said he’d ran up massive debts to his suppliers who demanded he pay them off.

Police later swooped on his Edinburgh home during a raid and found more than 440 grammes of cocaine

2. Yellow weather warning for Edinburgh

The Met Office has warned that severe weather is set to descend on Edinburgh.

From Friday November 26, a yellow weather warning has been issued to Edinburgh as wintry and blustery conditions could cause disruption.

Although there are sunny intervals throughout the weekend, the yellow weather warning is in place from 12pm on Friday straight through to 6pm on Saturday.

3. Shoddy Rose Street repairs blasted by locals

Two utilities firms have been blasted for ‘shoddy’ repair works on one of Edinburgh's most historic streets after sections were left patched up for more than six months.

Scottish Power and Scottish Water are accused of leaving Rose Street ragged and rutted following maintenance carried out earlier this year.

The firms installed “temporary reinstatements” after the completion of works - including tarmacking over cobblestones fitted on the busy thoroughfare just over two years ago.

4. Popular climbing venue under threat

Bosses at a popular Edinburgh bouldering arena have warned the sport is at risk of disappearing from the centre of the Capital for good if the under-threat facility is bulldozed to make way for a housing development.

Alien Bloc could be forced to shut its doors when the lease on their Bonnington home expires, despite a surge in popularity following the Olympic Games.

Developer HUB has outlined initial proposals for a ‘mixed-use’ project to take over the site on Dunedin Street, but stressed it would listen to feedback from the community before submitting official blueprints to city planning chiefs.

5. Proclaimers tour dates

Scottish music legends The Proclaimers have spared fans a 500-mile journey after confirming back-to-back live dates in the Capital next year.

The Auchtermuchty twins are set to take the Edinburgh Playhouse from misery to happiness on December 9 and 10, the venue has confirmed.

The brothers, famed for hits including Cap in Hand and Sunshine on Leith, are set to record their 12th studio album in 2022 before heading out on tour - including a main stage appearance at the Isle of Wight festival in June.

The album will be their first since the release of 2018’s Angry Cyclist - coinciding with their last performance at the Capital theatre.
