Edinburgh bowling club to be torn down after devastating fire ripped through the building

An Edinburgh bowling club is set to be demolished after a huge fire ripped through the property last week.

The council have approved a decision for the Colinton Mains bowling club to be torn down after the building suffered extensive structural damage.

Police and fire crews had rushed to the scene on August 15 after reports of the building being set alight, with smoke seen and smelt by local residents.

Despite the work of multiple appliances and crews the site was destroyed by the flames, with large sections of the club crumbling into disarray.

Extensive damage was also pictured on the interior of the building, which was said to have been previously tarnished by vandals.

Derelict since 2019, the site was said to be attracting antisocial behaviour, with a number of complaints made to police in the week leading up to the blaze.

After assessing the site this week, Councillor Scott Arthur confirmed that the building would be soon demolished, leaving the site and land empty.

The club had passed into the hands of the council in 2019 with plans at the time to use the plot for a number of new homes, however it is unclear if these plans will be put into motion.
