Edinburgh-bound train branded 'unsafe and appalling' after 'luggage falls towards family'

It's been claimed that a train from London to Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon was so packed that passengers were piling their suitcases against the doors.

One passenger, who referred to herself as Em, said she witnessed the suitcases fall out towards a family. LNER have said line dewirement caused cancellations, which led to "particularly busy" services.

Passengers onboard the 1.30pm service from London Kings Cross were unable to get on or off certain carriages, or use the toilet. The service was delayed in leaving, though not by 30 minutes - which is LNERs policy for refunds, something Em says they should've received as they were 'shoved in like sardines'.

In a tweet, Em said: "I’m on the 13:30 Kings X to Edinburgh train and this is where I’m currently sat.

"This door opened at Peterborough causing suitcases to fall out towards a family with two young children. Nobody is able to get on/off this carriage or use the toilet. Unsafe and appalling."

LNER then replied to her tweet apologising, and enquiring which carriage she was in. In response, Em said: "Why did you ask which carriage this was?

"Nobody came to check up on the safety and well-being of the people in this carriage and at every station more and more people piled on so I’m wondering what was done to tackle this issue once you found out the carriage."

Another passenger onboard replied to the thread, adding: "I’ve already told them the service is unsafe. They fobbed me off, and have kept piling more people onboard at every stop."

Em told Edinburgh Live : "The overhead tannoy was repeating apologies, but swiftly followed by ‘you can only claim a refund on a ticket if your train is delayed by 30 minutes or more’ which lo and behold we weren’t.

"So we can’t claim a refund on a train where we were shoved in like sardines holding up a suitcase barricade."

Speaking to Edinburgh Live , LNER said: "Due to an overhead line dewirement there has been disruption throughout the day and a number of services were particularly busy following cancelations."
