Edinburgh bomb squad sent out and street locked down after object found in canal

A bomb disposal squad was forced to detonate an object in Edinburgh after it was discovered in the Union Canal.

Police Scotland have confirmed that specialist officers were called out on Sunday afternoon after calls had been made to alert them to the item at around 12.15pm.

Teams had quickly raced to the Gibson Terrace area of the city in Fountainbridge, where a cordon was set up around the street, with an area surrounding the canal closed off.

According to police, the "unexploded ordinance" was examined by teams, before being moved to a separate location in Gypsy Brae.

After being moved by the bomb disposal squad, the item was "safely detonated."
