Edinburgh Black Lives Matter activists hold George Floyd vigil at Holyrood

Dozens of activists took the knee outside the Scottish Parliament in a vigil marking a year since the murder of George Floyd.

MSP Foysol Choudhury joined supporters holding Black Lives Matter placards at Holyrood on Tuesday afternoon following similar tributes in his home state of Minnesota and New York City last weekend.

The 46-year-old father was killed by then-police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes on May 25 last year.

Chauvin was later found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Floyd after a worldwide wave of protest against police brutality targeted towards black communities.

Scottish activists braved the pouring rain to pay their own tribute to Floyd, with some displaying poignant signs reading 'My skin colour is not a crime'.

Floyd's family members - including daughter Gianna - met with US President Joe Biden on the anniversary of his death as a bid to pass legislation banning police from using chokeholds and create a national standard for policing stalled.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act has gained bipartisan support in the US congress, but negotiations over the new laws remain ongoing.

Thousands took to the streets of Minneapolis over the weekend to pay tribute to Floyd, with sister Bridgett making an emotional address to those in attendance.

“It has been a long year. It has been a painful year," she told the crowd.

"It has been frustrating for me and my family for our lives to change in the blink of an eye – I still don’t know why."
