Edinburgh being put under tier three coronavirus restrictions is "wrong" slams Edinburgh MP

Edinburgh's MP for the South has slammed Nicola Sturgeon's decision to consider putting the city into tier three calling it "wrong".

Yesterday, the First Minster said that much of the central belt will likely be placed under tier three restrictions, which would see hospitality hit with a curfew and banned from selling alcohol.

But Ian Murray hit out at the decision, pointing out that Edinburgh has "relatively low infection rates."

The Labour MP also demanded that there be a 'criteria' set "for how areas move between tiers."

In a frustrated post online, Ian Murray said: "The Scottish Parliament was asked to “note” this today and I watched in order to hear how areas move between tiers and what the criteria is for that movement.

"Astonishingly there is no criteria for how areas move between tiers. It’s key for Edinburgh as we have relatively low infection rates (82 per 100,000 today whereas Glasgow is nearly 400 as an example.).

"So why is Edinburgh in Tier 3 when the city only has similar infection rates to those areas being placed in Tier 2?

"How does Edinburgh get to Tier 2 or 1 if infection rates are already relatively low? If it is on the basis of a number what is it?

"What happens if it falls to tier 4 because infection rates rise but from a lower base?"

The Labour MP added that Sturgeon's justification was "not good enough"

"No answers given by the First Minister today beyond “judgement”.

"Not good enough.

"Businesses are going bust and residents are sacrificing a lot.

"We need more than just “judgement” because if that is all we have then the original judgement to our Edinburgh into Tier 3 is wrong on the raw figures alone."
