Edinburgh beer garden with incredible castle views set for post-lockdown return

Plans have been submitted to turn a car park into a beer garden with some rather spectacular views ahead of restrictions easing next month.

Under the current route map, Scottish pubs, bars and restaurants will be able to open and serve alcohol outdoors until 10pm from April 26. While indoor hospitality areas can also open, they cannot sell alcohol.

This is likely why one hostel is keen to see a return of their beer garden that they opened for the first time last summer following the first nationwide lockdown.

Plans have been submitted to Edinburgh Council on behalf of Kickass Hostels to turn a former car park into a beer garden once more for summer.

The beer garden would be located at Kick Ass Hostel in the heart of the Cowgate and boasts incredible views of Edinburgh Castle.

The application reads: "Currently occupied by an outdoor seating area with picnic tables which was created to comply with coronavirus restrictions. This area was formerly a private parking area for the hostel with space for four vehicles.

According to the plans, the business is looking to erect a new timber pergola and carry out landscaping on the area in time for bars reopening.

An application to the council's licensing board shows the hostel plans to open from 11am daily and make it family-friendly. The board granted permission for the outdoor drinking area for up to 40 customers, who must be seated.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live previously about the beer garden, a spokesperson for Kick Ass Hostels said: "Our target audience is usually backpackers from all over the world but since opening the beer garden we are looking for ways to let the locals know it is open to the public and we want to share how amazing our wee spot is!"

Pictures of the space gave rise to suggestions that this venue might just have one of the best views of the castle in Edinburgh.
