Edinburgh bar boss apologises to English visitor over 'cocky' waitress

Bosses of an Edinburgh bar have apologised to an English tourist after they complained about a 'cocky waitress'.

The Conan Doyle is rated a respectable four stars out of five on Tripadvisor with many customers ranking it as 'excellent' and 'very good'.

However while most customers praise the location, 'friendly staff' and atmosphere, one guest was left unimpressed after being told to move seats by a member of staff.

The popular bar on York Place quickly responded and apologised.

In the one star review, the disgruntled customer wrote: "We visited The Conan Doyle for a drink for my wife's 60th Birthday. We called at lunch time and sat in the window, and had a very pleasant drink. But when we went back for a drink after a celebratory meal for my wife's 60th birthday it was a different story.

"I went to the bar, and my wife went to find a table. I was just ready to pay for my drinks when the wife came back telling me she had been asked to move because those seats near the window were reserved for meals only. And when I looked around I couldn't see anywhere to sit in the bar area either.

"So I told the barman that if we couldn't find a place to sit I wasn't buying the drinks. Just at that two people got up and started to put their coats on, so we grabbed their table.

"Shortly after that a group of four people came in, and the same lady took them to the very table my wife and I had been moved from.

"And to make matters worse, they only ordered drinks. I called the lady over and asked her why she had gave them our table if they weren't ordering food. She told us that it was because it was quiet, and she couldn't seat them anywhere else.

"She then said, in a cocky manner, is there anything else I can do for you. I said 'yes, you could at least clean all the glasses off our table'. So, she sent someone over to clear our table. but then stood behind the bar talking to the barman about us. Very rude indeed.

The boss quickly replied and commented: "Hello, and thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear you had a negative experience at our pub."

But with the bar being in the city centre and close to the Playhouse, it is a busy spot with many other customers praising it and their staff.

One said: "Popped in for a drink before going to Playhouse. Busy pub but friendly efficient staff served everyone quickly and with a smile."

A second commented: "Visited here straight from the airport on the way to the hotel. Staff very welcoming and helpful, had space to store suitcase while we sat and enjoyed a beer and some scotch broth. Excellent food, nice place and good location."

To which the boss replied: "Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. The team love hearing comments such as this. We hope to see you again for a beer or two. Happy travels."
