Edinburgh robbery drama as police lockdown St Andrews Square with 'bloodied witnesses'

An Edinburgh bank was on lock down following an early-morning robbery.

Officers raced to the Royal Bank of Scotland at the capital's St Andrews Square just before 2am.

It has since emerged that two men, aged 27 and 57, were attempting to deposit a five-figure sum of cash at the bank's night safe when they were approached by four men in balaclavas.

One of the men was assaulted and the bag of money was stolen.

The suspects then left the bank in a dark coloured saloon vehicle, heading down Queen Street, then onto York Place on the wrong side of the road.

Pictures from the scene show a cordon around the building with a vehicle behind police tape.

ITV journalist Joe Pike tweeted that officers were "taking statement from witness with bloodied face".

He added that a witness was heard telling police "There were six or seven of them. They must have been waiting".

Officers are urging anyone with information to get in touch.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Grant from Corstorphine CID said: "I would like to re-assure the public this appears to be an isolated incident and isn't a crime that regularly occurs.

"This has been a terrifying experience for the two victims and left one of them with a facial injury.

"The centre of Edinburgh was busy last night and we urge anyone who saw the incident or the vehicle to get in touch via 101 quoting incident number 0491 of August 25."
