Edinburgh bank could be renovated into gym aimed at office workers

A new gym aimed at office workers is set to open in the middle of Edinburgh city centre.

The fitness centre at Princes Exchange will be open seven days a week until 10pm and it is expected to bring at least 15 new full-time jobs to the capital.

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the proposal from G2G Coaching Limited on Monday October 4 for the new gym at the old Bank of Scotland at 3 Early Grey Street.

The huge complex at New Uberior House was created in 2000 and the bank operated one of the units on the ground floor until recently.

The developers now want to take over the location and create the new gym to take advantage of the burgeoning numbers of office workers in the area.

They explained more about their intentions for the premises on the planning application and say Scottish Rugby are involved in the process.

A spokesperson said: “The gym will provide facilities for visiting members of the public and nearby office workers at Uberior House/Princes Exchange. Ten full-time jobs will be provided, increasing to 15 jobs at full-time capacity.

“The gym will also train 10-15 per year. In addition, it will help ex-athletes become qualified coaches and provide a focus for training the injured to become fit and healthy, and Scottish Rugby are involved.

“Noise will be minimised, no loud music will be played, and the main equipment used will be for resistance training, including barbells. No cardio equipment requiring electricity will be used, helping to manage the gym’s carbon footprint. No parking is currently provided for the unit, but there is basement parking in the building if required. The gym will be open until 10pm seven days a week and will likely accommodate 100+ members.”

The City of Edinburgh Council are expected to make a decision on the application in the coming weeks.
