Edinburgh awoken as low-flying helicopter circles city as part of 'police operation'

Edinburgh was awoken by a low-flying police helicopter circling large parts of the city late on Tuesday night.

The rotorcraft was spotted in skies above Leith, Gorgie, the Old Town, and the south west of the city, from around 11pm.

Police were using the helicopter as part of an "ongoing operation" including the execution of warrants.

A number of people reported hearing the vehicle, which spent around an hour over the Scottish capital.

The helicopter was an Airbus EC135, and appeared to be focusing searches around the Southside and Arthur's Seat, the Haymarket area, and Gorgie.

Several locals posted on social media after spotting the helicopter.
