Edinburgh author Ian Rankin wakes up to trashed Meadows after lockdown protests and parties

Edinburgh crime writer Ian Rankin was among local residents waking up in shock after seeing the aftermath of a rowdy day at The Meadows on Saturday.

The novelist, who is most famous for his popular Inspector Rebus books and who lives in the Meadows area, shared pictures of the park strewn with litter and alcohol, with the caption: "Good Morning Edinburgh."

It comes as the area was swarmed by police units yesterday after anti-lockdown protesters gathered at the park resulting in four arrests.

Police were then called back to the Meadows at around 7.15pm last night after youths gathered for a boozy meet up.

A police spokesperson said: "Police have attended in relation to reports about youths drinking and have dispersed the youths."

Locals were forced to take to the park this morning to clean up the area after the parties which hundreds of youths are understood to have attended.

One local uploaded pictures of him cleaning up the area with the caption: "Cool if you’re going to drink in the Meadows, but PLEASE don’t leave all of your broken glass, baggies and empties for other people to clean up!!."

Another added: "Be careful if you have dogs, the meadows are a dump this morning and there’s tonnes of broken glass."
