Edinburgh artist snaps unsettling wooden figures in popular woodland

Some peculiar and rather unsettling looking stick men have once again reappeared in the woods around the Cramond area in the capital.

Athena La Diosa, 29, came across the stick models when walking through the woods last week but returned on January 2 to find even more stick men attached to the wire fencing.

The artist regularly practises her photography skills in natural settings and says that as a spiritual person she did not think much of the figures when she first came across them.

However both her mother and her Venezuelan partner felt that there was a negative aura around the objects - with her partner saying that stick men can often be connected to voodoo in South America.

But this is not the first time that stick figurines have appeared in the woods around Cramond with the Daily Record reporting in 2015 that eight large stick men were found around a fire by a walker.

Back then they interviewed practising witch Pauline Reid, who at the time was the high priestess of the Hearth Coven in Glasgow.

She said the figures could be linked to the pagan Lammas festival, which takes place today.

Stick figures in wooded areas have often been used during solstice periods but also grew in popularity by those playing pranks after the airing of the Blair Witch Project horror film.

Athena says that she personally would not like to hypothesise over the reason why the models appeared and said that there could be a variety of reasons behind why the objects were hung in the popular woods.

Let us know what you think is the reason behind the stick men in the comment section below.

Athena’s artwork can be viewed on Instagram here.
