A hillwalker has been hospitalised after sparking a major search and rescue operation involving specialist vehicles on Arthur’s Seat.

Emergency crews from Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service responded to calls for assistance at the Capital landmark on Friday afternoon when a visitor suffered an injury while climbing in the area.

Mountain Rescue Teams also attended the incident and were placed on standby when the casualty was initially unable to be located by responders.

The Ambulance Service deployed the use of their ‘Wolverine’ All Terrain Vehicle to evacuate the injured walker, who was later transported to hospital for further treatment.

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team were called in to assist with the operation, but were eventually stood down after the injured party was retrieved.

The walker is now recovering but his current condition is unknown.

A statement from the MRT read: " On Friday afternoon the Scottish Ambulance Service requested MRT support via Police Scotland to assist with the evacuation of an injured walker on Arthur's Seat.

"Information as to the location and accessibility of the casualty was initially quite vague. However, the Ambulance Services's Special Operations Team managed to reach the casualty with their Wolverine All Terrain Vehicle just as our Edinburgh based members were arriving on scene and the team was stood down.

"Although not required in the end we are always happy to assist our colleagues in the statutory services and would have been able to assist with a stretcher evacuation should the situation have demanded it."
