Edinburgh areas with most Covid-19 cases as vaccine passport extension mooted

New data shows Edinburgh’s six most infectious areas for Covid-19 as it revealed new rules are being considered over vaccine passports.

The latest Public Health Scotland data shows that there are 11 neighbourhoods in the highest zone for infections on the heatmap.

The six most infectious among them are Mountcastle, Corstorphine North, Bonaly and the Pentlands, Gilmerton South and the Murrays, South Gyle and Clovenstone and Wester Hailes.

Mountcastle is the most infectious with 16 new cases among their 2557 residents over the last week.

Corstorphine North was next with 22 from their population of 3848 in the last seven days.

Bonaly and the Pentlands recorded 27 new cases from 4748 residents.

Gilmerton South and the Murrays had 21 new cases from the 3707 people who live in the area.

South Gyle was fifth highest with 27 new cases over the week from their 5027 residents.

And Clovenstone and Wester Hailes recorded 19 cases among their population of 3695.

As of November 9 the latest PHS data show that there were 260 new cases recorded across Edinburgh, with 1226 across the week, and a new total of 59,765 since the pandemic started last year.

Meanwhile, in a statement to MSPs this week, Deputy First Minister John Swinney warned the country was in a “precarious” position with the virus and expressed concerns about the impact on Christmas.

He said clear vaccine passports could be extended to other hospitality venues, comments widely interpreted to mean pubs and restaurants.

Dr Andrew Buist, of the BMA, agreed and said they should be a condition of entry to cinemas and theatres,

Dr Buist, Chair of the BMA’s GP Committee, said: “Personally, I would be supportive of that.

“If I’m going into a cinema or theatre or something like that, I think it would be useful to know that people I don’t know have been vaccinated. That would give me some comfort. And so, in short, I would be supportive of the proposal to extend it.”
