Edinburgh anti-lockdown protesters clash with police as cops swarm Meadows

Videos have emerged of protesters arguing with Police Scotland officers at The Meadows this afternoon after a large protest broke out against the country's ongoing lockdown measures.

Police have currently swarmed the area after Covid denier group "Stand Up Edinburgh" formed a crowd at the park.

In a video shared on social media, the protesters can be heard shouting "It's an agenda that you are being used to push" at a police officer. Pictures from the scene show multiple police units in attendance at The Meadows.

A woman is also heard accusing both the government, police and NHS of "pushing an agenda," saying that it part of a "great reset."

It comes as Edinburgh Live reported how the organisers had planned to open up a number of local businesses today regardless of government lockdown rules currently in place.

But despite organisers' "best attempts" the plan was called off in Scotland after a lack of interest.

In messages seen by Edinburgh Live, organisers told supporters they had called the event off after "months" of work due to businesses choosing not to open.

The event was supposed to be called Dubbed the "Great Reopening", and it was hoped that they could inspire a number of businesses to rebel against the current lockdown regulations that have forced hospitality and non-essential retail to close due to coronavirus.

Instead, they took to the Meadows in Edinburgh this afternoon to gather at an anti-lockdown protest that began at around 1 pm this afternoon.

In a social media group, members were encouraged to travel to the capital from different areas despite restrictions on crossing local authority boundaries.

It is also understood that they shared a plan to try and 'trick' the police by allowing them to believe the protest would be held at The Scottish Parliament rather than The Meadows.

In a voice note heard by Edinburgh Live, protesters say they had been watching police" gather at Holyrood before seeing them move on.

They continued to keep an eye on police movements across the capital asking group members if they had seen any cops at areas such as Calton Hill and Leith Links.

"If things go s*** regroup at the National Museum," a message to supporters read.

"Hopefully the Gestapo don't stop us today," the organiser added.

Responding to this message, one person said: "I think we need to stand our ground today.

"Can't keep running away."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
