Edinburgh and Lothians recorded fifth highest rate of drug related deaths in Scotland

Edinburgh and the Lothians had the fifth highest number of drug related deaths between 2014 and 2018.

Figures released today showed Scotland had the highest rate of drug related deaths in the EU.

The report by National Records of Scotland showed that there were 1, 187 drug related deaths in Scotland last year - an increase of 27 per cent from 2017.

Scotland's rate is now three-times that of the UK.

Of Scotland’s 14 health boards, Lothian’s rate was 0.14 per 1,000 population, just 0.2 below the national rate of 0.16.

Fife’s rate was identical, with the Borders registering 0.12 per 1,0000 population.

Drug related deaths based on council areas showed that City of Edinburgh was seventh with a rate of 0.18 per 1,000 population.

East Lothian and Midlothian both showed a death rate of 0.12 while West Lothian was 0.11.

There are thought to be 60,000 problem drug users in Scotland, from a population of 5.4million.

Earlier this month, sister title the Daily Record launched a campaign to decriminalise drug use to try and reduce the number of deaths.
