Edinburgh and Lothians Covid-19 December infection rates predicted by new interactive map

A new interactive map is predicting the Covid-19 infection rates in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife come the start of December.

Research from Imperial College London suggests the outlook is a touch brighter in Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian than it is in West Lothian, Fife and some other parts of Scotland.

The study claims there's just a 24 per cent chance of Edinburgh having more than 100 virus cases per 100,000 people come December 5. The figure is even lower in Midlothian (23 per cent) and East Lothian (19 per cent).

However researchers reckon there's a 61 per cent chance in West Lothian, and worryingly there's a 100 per cent chance of there being more than 100 cases per 100,000 people in Fife.

As a result Fife is most likely to be considered a Covid-19 hotspot in the lead up to Christmas, with worrying trends also in Stirling (99 per cent), Glasgow City (99 per cent) and Renfrewshire (98 per cent).

The interactive map uses data such as daily and weekly reported deaths, the R number probability, but doesn't take into account any potential changes in circumstance such as future lockdowns.

West Lothian is set to enter level four lockdown restriction on Friday, with East Lothian and Midlothian dropping down to level two where the rules are a touch more relaxed. Edinburgh will remain in level three.
