Edinburgh and East Lothian Forth Estuary to host world's biggest boat this weekend

Edinburgh and East Lothian locals will be subject to seeing a huge marine operation this week as a drilling platform is carted along the shore.

On Saturday evening (April 10), the gigantic vessel will make its way the Forth Estuary near Gullane Bay, and will be carrying the largest construction machinery in the world.

At more than 1,250ft long and 400ft wide, the Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit is the world's largest vessel by gross tonnage and was built in South Korea

The floating behemoth will haul the massive drilling platform as well as a 200-metre long cargo barge through the water, and won't be a hard one to miss.

The drill, known as the 'Iron Lady', is being moved as part of its decommission programme, meaning the trip through the water will be its last.

With a capacity to lift around 48,000 tonnes, the ship will leave on Saturday subject to weather conditions with the drill on its back, and will keep moving along until Sunday morning, where the Iron Lady will be dispensed.

From there, three massive tugboats will pull the platform through the water under all three of the Forth Bridges into the Port of Rosyth.

The Iron Lady will be moored at the Port of Rosyth for approximately six weeks, after which it is scheduled depart for the Energy Park Fife in Methil where its cargo will be unloaded prior to its decommissioning.

If the operation is cancelled due to weather, officials have advised that it will take place the following day.
