EDINBURGH Airport held all flights as a nationwide air traffic control issue affected all outbound flights from the UK this afternoon.
Air traffic control provider Nats announced just after 4pm that its Swanwick centre in Hampshire had suffered a technical problem.
The company said it is limiting the number of aircraft which can fly in the “London control area”.
Edinburgh Airport later announced is was holding all departures while awaiting further information.
"Due to a technical issue impacting NATS, all departures from Edinburgh Airport are currently being held," a statement released on Twitter/X said.
"We are waiting for further information from NATS and will provide updates when possible.
"Please check with your airline for the latest information on your flight."
Birmingham Airport had also said “departing flights from many UK airports have been suspended”.
Newcastle Airport confirmed all departures were suspended also.
Several flights scheduled to arrive at UK airports was forced to conduct holding patterns or divert elsewhere.
Travellers had been advised to check with their airline on the status of flights.
Around 30 minutes after the initial alert, Edinburgh Airport said: "NATS have confirmed the issue has now been resolved. We thank passengers for their patience while we work to return to normal operations."
More than 700,000 passengers suffered disruption when flights were grounded at UK airports on August 28 2023 when Nats suffered a technical glitch while processing a flight plan.
