Edinburgh Airport celebrates its busiest May on record

Edinburgh Airport enjoyed its busiest May ever with 1,381,187 passengers travelling through.

That was up 4.3% up on the previous May, helped by new routes and increased capacity on existing routes.

A yearly domestic market increase of 3.8% was put down to m ore Flybe flights to London Heathrow, Ryanair's new route to Derry and Loganair starting new routes to Guernsey and Islay.

An international rise of 4.6% was aided by L ufthansa's new route to Munich, Loganair's new routes to Bergen and Stavanger, Emirates' new daily service to Dubai, Hainan Airlines' new service to Beijing Qatar introducing the larger Airbus A350 and D elta increasing to a daily service to JFK and launching a new route to Boston.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport said: “Growth is always good as it shows a thirst for travel to and from Scotland, be that for leisure or business purposes, and our increased connectivity allows us to offer that choice to passengers. And as we come into the summer season, we hope the breadth of destination and trip that is available at Edinburgh brings even more people through our doors.

“We do, however, remain cautious as airlines plan their winter and summer schedules for next year and look at new and existing routes as well as capacity on those routes. We strive to keep Edinburgh as attractive as possible and hope to maintain steady numbers despite other contributing factors.”
