Edinburgh Airport break million passenger mark in March

Edinburgh Airport hit its first ever 'million passenger March' last month after a double-digit rise in traffic, according to figures out today

A total of just over 1.1 million people used the terminal, an increase of 14.8% on the same month last year although the 2018 figure had included the Beast from the East period.

Domestic traffic rose by 18.2% and international by 12.5%.

The million passenger milestone for March came six years after the airport achieved its first ever million passenger month in July.

Particularly popular destinations in March included Madrid, Athens, Lisbon, Gdansk, Alicante and New York City.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport said although the figures represented a significant milestone, there was considerable uncertainty facing the airline sector.

BA flew passengers to Edinburgh instead of Dusseldorf by mistake

“While these figures are good, we always need to look ahead and consider what is on the horizon and uncertainty caused by Brexit, the expensive aviation tax we face and the impact it has on our airlines," he said.

"We will continue to work to mitigate and manage those things as best possible and for the benefit of our passengers.”
