Edinburgh Airport bars spark confusion by still serving booze despite new rules

Pubs across the central belt may be shut for two weeks but air travellers can still enjoy a bevvy at Edinburgh airport.

Both All Bar One and Wetherspoons are continuing to serve booze thanks to different rules for ‘airside’ bars.

That means airport watering holes are exempt from the new restrictions announced by Nicola Sturgeon last week to stem the spread of coronavirus.

A post on the Edinburgh Airport All Bar One Instagram page read: "In light of the recent government guidelines issued, we have been authorised to remain open for business as usual."

A source told Edinburgh Live that staff at All Bar One were told the airside venues were "exempt" from the new restrictions.

But employees are said to be "concerned".

A Wetherspoon's employee also confirmed that The Sir Walter Scott bar is still open and serving alcohol.

Official Scottish Government guidance on the current rules states that there is "limited exemption for meals and drinks (without alcohol) for guests staying in accommodation, for transport and for student residences that are licensed premises".

Alcohol sales are only permitted as part of room service within licensed accommodation.

However, a spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport insisted that the bars are not flouting restrictions, pointing to Scottish Government legislation in which "premises which are airside at an airport" are not considered to “licensed premises”.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoon also said that airside units at airports do not require a licence to sell alcohol, adding: "The regulations specifically exempt premises which are airside at airports from the restrictions both in respect of opening hours and sale of alcohol.

"This was confirmed by our Scottish licensing solicitors and has been endorsed by the airport management."
