Edinburgh Airbnb: Under 25s stopped from renting 'party flats' in new regulations

Airbnb has revealed new regulations which will allow them to stop people under the age of 25 from booking an apartment in Edinburgh.

The new restrictions have been introduced by the accommodation provider after the First Minister warned young people about the consequences of having house parties or large indoor gatherings.

At Thursday's daily briefing, Nicola Sturgeon reiterated the rules surrounding indoor interactions after a number of cluster cases around Scotland were linked to similar social gatherings.

To avoid encouraging these kind of events, Airbnb have introduced the new restriction across the UK and will limit under 25s from renting entire homes on their website, reports Glasgow Live.

The ban will come into force across the UK and also in France and Spain, and will prohibit under 25s with less than three positive ratings from renting entire homes close to where they live.

However, there are certain exceptions to the rule, as those under 25 with at least three positive reviews and no negative ones will not be subject to the ban.

And all users can book private rooms and hotel rooms via the platform.

In a statement, Airbnb said “The restriction is intended to protect local communities while still allowing younger guests to book listings outside of their local area."

Today further rules were also released by the Scottish Government for the hospitality industry as they attempt to crackdown on the rise in cases transmitted in pubs, bars and restaurants.

From this weekend, no background music will be allowed in any venue, with Scots encouraged to visit only one pub or restaurant per day.
