Edinburgh A720 city bypass section to close for 12 days as major repairs begin

Sections of the Edinburgh bypass will soon face nearly two weeks of diversions and disruption as work begins to resurface the westbound carriageway.

The work on the A720 will focus on resurfacing the route from the Sheriffhall roundabout to Lothianburn, with the work beginning on Monday, June 20.

The overnight works will be carried out by BEAR Scotland and the project is planned to run over 12 nights, including weekends.

During the work, the road will be closed between Sheriffhall Roundabout and Lothianburn Junction from 8.30pm until 6.00am each night, in order to protect workers as they perform the maintenance.

Diversions are being signposted for all westbound journeys via the A7, A772 and A772 Lasswade, which is estimated to add 12 minutes and 2.3 miles to the journeys of affected drivers.

The operation will address and repair potholes and cracks along the road

BEAR Scotland is the main provider of road maintenance services for Scotland.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s Southeast Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements on the A720 at Straiton will address and repair defects in the road surface such as potholes and cracks, creating safer and smoother journeys for motorists.

“It is essential for safety of that we close the carriageway during these works, however we’ve scheduled them primarily during overnight hours to minimise any disruption.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these improvements.”
