Edinburgh 97-year-old woman dies after early morning blaze

A 97-year-old woman has sadly died in hospital after a fire in Edinburgh.

Firefighters raced to a blaze at a two-story home on Braehead Avenue in the early hours at around 5.19 am on Thursday (July 8).

Four fire engines and the ambulance service were dispatched to the scene and a pensioner was rushed to Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary where she later died due to life-threatening injuries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of a fire at a property on Braehead Avenue in Edinburgh around 5.40am on Thursday, 8 July, 2021.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. A 97-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she died a short time later.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
