Edge Hill to host debate on multiculturalism, teachers and schools

Debates about assimilation, integration and multiculturalism have raged and shaped the nation’s response to the presence of people from minority ethnic groups in Britain.

In particular, the educational response has been marked by numerous policy shifts. As Britain has evolved into a multi-ethnic society, educational debates about preparing to teach and live in an ethnically diverse society have stalled as policy priorities have changed.

This has left many teachers, educators and young people unclear about the language to use to talk about ethnic diversity as they are hindered by the constraints of political-correctness or colour-blindness.

Professor Arvinder (Vini) Kaur Lander will discuss these issues, her research, career and experiences at her inaugural lecture at the university in Ormskirk on Thursday 5 March.

In this video she explains how she will trace the journey of multicultural Britain through the narratives of minoritised children, teachers and teacher educators who have adopted, adapted and integrated to shape their belonging in Britain.

Professor Lander joined Edge Hill University in June 2014 as head of research in the faculty of education. She has an international research profile and was given the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Meeting of Minds award for emerging researchers.

She is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and was awarded a HEA National Teaching Fellowship in 2014.

Inaugural lectures mark the appointment of new professors and allow the university to showcase its academic talent to a wide audience. Book a free place on the Edge Hill website.
