Poe has been a challenge to visualisers ever since his Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque first hit bookstands in 1839. How do you turn his vivid fictions into pictures? Illustrators such as Aubrey Beardsley and Harry Clarke and film makers such as Roger Corman and – most recently – James McTeigue have tried, with varying degrees of success.
