EDF, Octopus, British Gas, SEE and more websites crash as people race to give meter readings

Furious households across the UK have been unable to submit meter readings to EDF, British Gas, SEE and more as the energy companies face technical issues.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has been urging members of the public to take photographs of their pre-payment meters by Thursday, March 31, and to submit the readings to their suppliers in order to save money before the price hike tomorrow.

But members of the public have reported being unable to submit their latest figures this morning with various energy company websites ‘crashing’.

Thousands have taken to Twitter this AM to report their issues with various energy providers over the last few days including E.ON customers who have been unable to login to the website.

One EDF energy customer tweeted: "@edfenergy how am I supposed to submit a meter reading before the prices go up if the website is down for “maintenance” very convenient to do it today isn’t it??"

Meanwhile, 350 customers are experiencing problems logging into their E.ON accounts according to Downdetector.

E.ON advised one customer via Twitter: "Our website and app are experiencing extremely high traffic. Our speedy tech teams are currently working on this in the background."

SSE's website is also facing issues, with one customer venting: "On one of the most critical days for your customers and your website and app are down?!"

One British Gas user wrote: "So @MartinSLewis advises we should get our meter readings in today, but the @BritishGas app is down and the website was offline for a couple of hours this morning. Am I reading too much into this, or are we being stopped from submitting meter readings? #energyripoff"

Consumer champions Which? have issued urgent advice to anyone struggling to submit their meter reading, writing on Twitter this morning: "Hearing lots of reports from people struggling to submit meter readings because their energy firm's website is down. If you can't submit - take a photo of your meter reading so you can prove when it was taken.

"Some energy companies also have automated phone lines you can use to submit meter readings, people can also try calling these numbers or emailing if they can't submit readings online."
