EDF 'not looking' at Wylfa Newydd nuclear site

Nuclear developer EDF says it's "not looking" at the Wylfa Newydd site but that it remains the “best site" in the UK.

The French firm - developing Hinkley Point C in Somerset - said the island development is attractive to investors.

But they told the New Civil Engineer they were focused on their own projects.

The £12bn Anglesey scheme has been on hold since January when Hitachi suspended the project after failing to reach a suitable funding agreement with the UK Government.

But the application for a Development Consent Order continued with a result expected on or before October 23.

Business and Energy Secretary Andrea Leadsom will announce the decision, with Hitachi subsidery Horizon Nuclear Power hoping a positive result could help their case to secure investment.

EDF head of communications David Eccles told New Civil Engineer : “Wylfa is the best site people say [for a new reactor].

“From a technological and geological point of view it is the best site in the United Kingdom.

“If you have a DCO [development consent order] ready to go there must be investors in the world [willing to invest in the project] I’d have thought.

“We [EDF] are not looking at it, we are entirely focussed on our sites.”
