EDF Energy issue update following worker who 'tested positive' for coronavirus

EDF Energy has issued an update after a worker 'tested positive' for coronavirus after working at Bridgewater House here in Bristol.

Yesterday, Bristol Live reported how Bridgewater House in the Finzels Reach area of the city had to be cleaned as a precautionary measure.

Today, a spokesperson for EDF Energy has confirmed the individual who worked in Bridgewater House whilst here in Bristol developed coronavirus symptoms two days after leaving the UK.

The worker, aged 35, is believed to have taken a Cathay Pacific flight from London to Hong Kong on February 27 and then a boat to Shenzhen where he fell unwell and was tested.

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

The spokesperson told Bristol Live: “Information reported online by the Chinese government said that the individual developed symptoms two days after leaving the UK.

"Public Health England has advised that, based on this information, this person would not have posed an infection risk to colleagues or other contacts in the United Kingdom.

"Public Health England is working with Chinese authorities to verify what has been reported.

"Should the information be confirmed, Public Health England is working with us to understand how the individual could have become infected.

"To support this, HPC is tracing people who may have been in contact with this individual between 15th and 27th February 2020 to see if they have shown symptoms.”

This case was among three identified on Saturday, February 29.

A second patient from Gloucestershire was confirmed on Sunday.

In a statement, chief medical officer for England Professor Chris Whitty said: “Three patients were close contacts of a known case, transmitted in the UK, identified as part of contact tracing.

“One patient, resident in Essex, had no relevant travel and it is not yet clear whether they contracted it directly or indirectly from an individual who had recently returned from abroad; investigations are ongoing.

“Of the remaining eight cases, six had recently travelled from Italy and two from Iran.

“The patients who have recently travelled are from London, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire. All are being investigated and contact tracing has begun.”

He added: “The total number of confirmed cases in England is now 33. Following previously reported confirmed cases in Northern Ireland and Wales, the total number of UK cases is 35.”
