Ederson sends fresh penalty plea to Pep Guardiola after Man City manager opens door

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has reaffirmed his desire to take penalties after Pep Guardiola confirmed he was in the frame for spot kick duties.

The Brazilian is renowned for his confidence and ability with the ball at his feet and previously claimed he is the "best penalty taker" in the City squad.

The Sky Blues missed an alarming four of their 11 efforts from 12 yards last season, with a total of six players tasked with the responsibility.

Guardiola gave a blunt assessment of his penalty takers after Ilkay Gundogan skied over the bar in the 4-1 victory at Liverpool in February.

"It's a problem that we have," said Guardiola of the German's miss. "In important moments, we cannot miss it, and it doesn't matter the taker.

"Again, I'm going to think about Ederson, he might be the taker next time."

Despite Guardiola's hint, Ederson is yet to take a penalty for City - but the 28-year-old claims he is ready if and when he is called on.

Asked where he would direct a penalty, he told CityTV : "I don't know. It depends on the game, what the game brings.

"Of course the pressure is higher it it's 0-0. In a penalty shooutout as well. But if you're winning 3-0 and there's a penalty, the player is much more relaxed.

"But I don't know how I would take it. But I can't say anyway. I haven't taken a single one and I won't be giving hints for the opponents. I hope someday it happens and you will see."

Ederson believes his ability from the penalty spot comes from his time training set pieces with his former club.

Should Ederson be handed penalties duty at Manchester City? Comment below.

"I don't train much free kicks," he said last November. "I trained penalties and when I played for Ribeirao I took some free kicks but that is in the past now.

"I am the best penalty taker but I am not chosen to take them!"

Ederson signed a new five-year contract with City at the start of the month and director of football Txiki Begiristain was keen to praise him for his excellent distribution.

"Ederson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world," said the Etihad chief.

"He is perfectly suited to our philosophy here at Manchester City and his ability with the ball at his feet makes him fundamental to our style of play.

"Since we signed him, he has added a new dimension to our game and has revolutionised goalkeeping in the Premier League in the process.

"His performances over the last four years have been nothing short of exceptional and there is no doubt he will continue to be a key player for us."
