Ederson's key role in Man City winning goal vs Southampton

Goalkeeper Ederson earned praise for his part in Manchester City's victory over Southampton.

As well as keeping a clean sheet, the Brazilian stopper played a key role in the only goal of the game in Saturday's Premier League clash at St Mary's.

Raheem Sterling's 16th-minute strike proved enough to give Pep Guardiola's men a welcome 1-0 victory on the south coast.

Kevin De Bruyne provided the assist but the goal stemmed from a long clearance upfield by Ederson rather than playing out from the back - in order to beat Southampton's press.

Pundit Roberto Martinez was pleased to see City mixing it up a bit and, in the process, catching their opponents by surprise.

"They (Southampton) were so confident and they only got done in this situation where almost they didn't expect Ederson to play that long pass to beat the pressure," the Belgium boss said on Amazon Prime Sport.

"They are still applying really good pressure and Ederson, one of the big qualities of our modern goalkeeper, can beat that pressure.

"You can see there are six players there and as soon as that ball goes long, it's the reaction of the City players. It's almost like they expected that long pass.

"It becomes a long pass in the final third and look at how quickly Man City now has got six bodies in the box, and then the quality of a world class playmaker like Kevin De Bruyne.

"He needs that chance to find the perfect step and that's a finish (by Sterling) that made a difference to the scoreline."
