Eden Hazard slammed for not taking Real Madrid move 'seriously' and being 'overweight'

Eden Hazard has been heavily criticised for his lacklustre first season at Real Madrid following their Champions League exit.

The Belgian was the marquee signing 12 months ago at the Bernabeu as he made the switch from Chelsea in a deal that could be worth up to £150m.

But former Blue Tony Cascarino has accused Hazard of not taking the transfer "seriously" having looked a shadow of the player who impressed so regularly at Stamford Bridge.

The winger, who has had to deal with injuries in Spain, has scored once in 22 outings and was largely anonymous as Los Blancos were dumped out of Europe by Manchester City.

And Cascarino believes the Belgian is now facing the consequences for not having the right mind frame in the Spanish capital.

He told TalkSport : "We all know how brilliant Hazard can be, we all know the difference he can make to a football team.

"But he didn't take the move to Madrid seriously, and he's paid for it this season. He turned up overweight, he's been playing catch-up, he's getting niggly injuries.

"Watching him last night was like watching a completely different player.

"Kyle Walker must've been thinking, "Is this the same player I faced at Chelsea?"

"He's a brilliant player, but he's paid the price for turning up at Madrid for a big fee and not taking it seriously.

"He does switch off every now and again. As good and as great as he can be, he does down tools every so often."

Hazard has finished the season with a La Liga winners medal after Madrid overhauled Barcelona in the title race, although the 28-year-old did play in less than half the games.

There is still much expected of him but the same cannot be said for Gareth Bale who refused to travel to Manchester for their European clash and may finally end his Spanish nightmare in the coming months.
