Eddie Nketiah goal: Alex McCarthy mistake allows Arsenal striker to score vs Southampton

Eddie Nketiah took full advantage of a huge mistake from Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to put Arsenal 1-0 ahead at St Mary's on Thursday.

Arsenal fell to a second successive defeat to Brighton on Saturday as they resumed their Premier League campaign, and travelled to Southampton desperately needing a win to keep their European ambitions alive.

Nketiah - who returned from a successful loan spell with Leeds in January - saw off competition from the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette to earn a place in Mikel Arteta's starting line-up again.

And the young forward certainly didn't disappoint, though it was McCarthy who did most of the hard work.

Following a routine pass back from left-back Jan Bednarek, McCarthy dallied on the ball, before searching for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in midfield.

Nketiah - who in fairness was pressing the keeper - intercepted the pass and simply placed the ball in an empty net for his second Premier League goal of the season.

The 21-year-old would perhaps not have been anticipating perhaps the easiest goal of his short career to date.

But, as the striker will tell you, they all count.
