Eddie Nketiah contract talks update as Arsenal risk losing striker on a free transfer

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah was close to leaving the Gunners this summer with Crystal Palace reportedly keen to sign the 22-year-old.

Despite the interest from Palace, no deal was agreed between the two clubs, with Palace instead moving for Odsonne Edouard from Celtic and the England Under-21 international remaining a Gunner until at least January.

Reports in The Sun claim that Arsenal were looking for a fee in the region of £20million for the striker, but by the end of August were willing to accept £12million. However, Mikel Arteta's team still had no takers for Nketiah and now risk losing the forward for nothing.

With less than a year remaining on his deal at the Emirates Stadium, Nketiah can leave his boyhood club for nothing next summer unless he agrees a new deal with the Gunners.

Nketiah's future is set to be decided in the coming weeks with the striker able to sign a pre-contract agreement with non-English sides in January over a free transfer next summer.

The Sun claim he could be looking at a huge pay rise from his current deal and will be looking for a weekly pay packet of £60,000-per-week plus a massive signing-on fee.

Nketiah was one of a number of squad members at Arsenal that the club were looking to move on over the summer but failed to do so.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolasinac join Nketiah in remaining at the club despite strong hints the trio were available for transfers away from north London.

However, the Gunners did manage to secure exits for four other first-team squad members late in the summer transfer window.

Hector Bellerin, Reiss Nelson, and Alex Runarsson all secured transfers away from the club, while Willian cancelled his contract with the club in order to facilitate an emotional return to his native Brazil.
