Eddie May explains how not going to games helped him pick the Hibs team that won in Perth

Eddie May said he picked the Hibs team that thumped St Johnstone without any preconceptions because he hadn’t been to any games previously.

The Easter Road club’s head of academy coaching got it bang on as a Chris Doidge hat-trick at McDiarmid Park and a fine Scott Allan goal gave them their first league win in over three months.

May has been placed in temporary charge of Hibs following the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom last week, and they cruised to a much needed three points in Perth to get his caretaker tenure off to the brilliant start.

The victory is perhaps even more impressive when you consider May hadn’t been attending matches before taking the reins.

But his decision to go with two strikers – Heckingbottom preferred to use just one – paid off big time as Flo Kamberi turned provider for the previously misfiring Doidge.

“I've not been to one game - I choose not, since I’m in charge of the academy - and that's great for me, because I can't judge the players on what they've done in the past,” May explained.

“All I can do is look at what they've done in training since Tuesday, which is why I picked the team I did.
“It couldn't have gone any better and I'm pleased for the team.

“The two up top certainly helped, they were both exceptional even though Christian got the goals.

“And it should be the standard this club sets out to achieve. If that’s not normal, what we saw today, and they’ve been exceptional here and not in other games, then we just have to ask the question of how they maintain it.”
