It was supposed to be Eddie Jones first day in the England job on Tuesday but he was unable to start work because he does not yet have a visa.
England’s new head coach remained in Tokyo apparently waiting on the Japanese embassy to expedite his paperwork, according to The Times.
The Australian was appointed on 20 November after meeting the Rugby Football Union in London having been allowed to travel to London on a visitor’s permit. He now needs a worker’s permit to make a start on his four-year contract.
His first stop after leaving London was to visit Los Angeles for a World Rugby conference before returning to his home in Tokyo.
Jones’s first game in charge of England will be their opening Six Nations game, against Scotland at Murrayfield on 6 February.
He joined the Stormers in Cape Town after guiding Japan to three wins at the World Cup but was hired by the RFU before he could pick his first team.
