Eddie Jones piles the pressure on Wales and insists they're Rugby World Cup favourites

Eddie Jones says Wales are now favourites for the Rugby World Cup after they went to number one in the world rankings.

Last week, England denied Warren Gatland’s side the chance to the top of the world by winning convincingly at Twickenham.

But Gatland’s side beat England 13-6 in Cardiff in the second of their World Cup warm-up games, leap-frogging New Zealand to the top spot in the process.

After the match, England boss Jones took the opportunity to pile the pressure on.

"They’re favourites for the World Cup now," insisted Jones. "I don’t have anything else to say.

"You go to number one in the rankings, then you’re favourites for the World Cup."

Wales boss Gatland took a different view on the rankings, insisting it isn’t something they’ll be getting too high about.

"It’s just a number, isn’t it?

"It’s a nice accolade to have but it’s all about the next few months and backing it up in the World Cup.

"We’ve got a couple of games against Ireland to go as well.

"It’s nice for a day but we won’t be shouting from the rooftops about it.

"We’ve got to keep things in perspective."

He added: "I don’t know. There will be lots of journalists saying it’s a joke, probably Kiwi journalists!

"It’s just a number, that’s all it is at the moment. We won’t be making a big fuss about it.

"We’ll just keep it in our pocket and go from week to week."
