Eddie Jones may need Owen Farrell cover for England vs Ireland Six Nations opener

England head coach Eddie Jones was today mulling over whether to bring in cover at fly-half for Owen Farrell ahead of the Six Nations opener against Ireland a week on Saturday.

Farrell had a minor operation on a thumb tendon on Saturday, forcing him to miss Saracens’ 38-19 Champions Cup win over Glasgow.

Danny Cipriani and Alex Lozowski would be among the candidates to be George Ford’s understudy but Jones has been reluctant to talk up the former’s chances.

Jones was also catching up on the well-being of Wasps trio Joe Launchbury, Brad Shields and Nathan Hughes.

Launchbury was taken off against Leinster with a neck injury, Shields missed the game with a side strain and Hughes rolled his ankle in the match.
