Eddie Jones says his experimental England side were "seduced" into thinking their autumn international against Japan would be a walkover.
Japan gave England a first half scare at Twickenham, leading 15-10 at the interval, before Jones' side - featuring 11 changes from the loss to New Zealand - responded to run out comfortable 35-15 winners.
Jones had been bullish about his side's chances of dishing out a hammering against the nation he used to coach, and when Danny Care crossed for the opening score after just three minutes, one looked to be on the cards.
However, led by the outstanding Michael Leitch, Japan responded to dominate the first period, and only with the introduction of Owen Farrell at half-time did the match swing back in England's favour.
"We wanted a game that would test us," Jones said. "We put out a different team and different combinations and wanted to see how players were combining in different positions.
"We were tested and probably got seduced by the game in the first couple of minutes by scoring an easy try.
"The players subconsciously think it's going to be easy and we knocked off a bit in our effort and attitude, which is disappointing, but I thought our second-half response was excellent."
