Eddie Jones considering dramatically changed side for England v France

Eddie Jones could field a weakened side when England come to face France in their final pool game of the World Cup.

Having become the first team to qualify for the knock-out stages following a convincing win against Argentina, England could see a dramatically changed starting XV for the Pool C clash on Saturday.

It's a dilemma for Jones as England could face Wales in the quarter-finals if they finish second in the group, but could take on Ireland, hosts Japan or South Africa in semi-finals if they beat Wales.

But a first place finish would likely see them face Australia in the quarter-finals, with reigning champions New Zealand in the semi-finals. A piece of statistical analysis has shown that England are more likely to make the final if they finish second in the pool.

France have also qualified for the group stages following their win against Tonga on Sunday but the match decides who wins the group.

Speaking about whether losing against France could be an advantage, Jones said: "I don't know, mate. I'm not even looking at it. The only thing I know is we are playing France next week. I don’t know any of the permutations, I don’t know where the quarter-final is.

"It's out next game, it's our most important game. We want to win every game - we're a side that wants to win every game. Is it important? It’s important because it’s our next game."

Before the tournament, Jones suggested the World Cup could be won by a team who finished second in their pool.

He said: "No team has ever done it because you go on the other side of the draw, which used to be problematic. Who knows these days? History is made to be broken. This could be the one where it is broken."

When asked whether his side would be the same as the side that faced Argentina, Jones said: "I doubt very much. I think we can improve the team. That’ll be the challenge - how can we improve the team?

"At this stage, I’ll be looking to pick our best 23. Now, our best 23 may be different from your best 23."

Among those in the England likely to be rested are Billy Vunipola, who picked up an ankle injury against Argentina, while his brother Mako Vuniopla and Exeter winger Jack Nowells are likely to start against France.
