Eddie Howe to hold talks with Matty Longstaff as midfielder's game-time diminishes at Aberdeen

Eddie Howe is hoping to hold talks with Matty Longstaff ahead of his January exit clause at Aberdeen.

The midfielder was sent to the Scottish Premiership club in the summer by loan chief Shola Ameobi on the proviso he would get the game-time he so desperately needs.

But despite the Dons sitting in the bottom half of the table he has been afforded just three league starts under former Toon winger Stephen Glass.

Glass said this week that his future with Aberdeen was out of his hands and it will be up to Newcastle whether they wish to recall him.

That would leave Longstaff facing a situation in which he tries to impress Howe and the new management team or goes out on a more suitable loan deal.

Howe said: "Matty Longstaff's situation I am aware of.

"I think I would encourage a conversation between Matty to see what his thought processes are.

"And then we will evaluate that one closer to January."

Glass had been asked by the Scottish media about Longstaff's absence from the squad at Aberdeen and he replied: "I think, clearly, Matty would’ve liked more game time, clearly we would’ve liked better performances."
