Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has challenged his side to make more 'memories' against Manchester United.
United enjoyed a fierce rivalry with Newcastle in the late 90s as the North East club fought for the Premier League title under Kevin Keegan and they famously squandered a 12-point lead in the 1995/96 season, which the Reds ruthlessly took advantage of.
But Newcastle are currently in the relegation zone and the club is a world away from those iconic matches against United.
Newcastle have won just one game all season and newly appointed Howe is yet to inspire an upturn in results.
The former Bournemouth boss was recently asked about Newcastle's brilliant games versus United that are now over two decades ago and, while he was honest about the current plight of the Magpies, he challenged his side to make more memories.
United play Newcastle at St. James' Park on Monday night and Howe reflected on the history of the fixture.
“There are a lot of memories that spring to mind of those games," Howe said.
"Newcastle tended in that period of time to have memorable games against most teams, to be honest, there are stand-out moments that you think back to. I can picture some of the goals and some of the scenes in my mind.
It’s up to us to try to recreate those times, the attacking verve, the swagger that that team had, the flare that the individual players possessed, but then the team took that identity over. It’s certainly something that we’re desperate to do.
"But we’re going to need a little bit of time to see that. At the moment, we’re still progressing and we have to get the defensive side of our game right before we transition into the team that we all want to be.”
