Eddie Howe's Newcastle United press conference moved with Premier League to make fixture decision

Newcastle United have rescheduled Eddie Howe's Friday morning press conference as the Premier League decide whether to postpone this weekend's top flight fixtures in the wake of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's passing.

Britain's longest-serving monarch sadly passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday evening, with the country set for a period of mourning. Football chiefs are due to make a statement in the coming hours regarding this weekend's sporting fixtures across the country.

Newcastle were due to take on West Ham United on Sunday afternoon but top flight fixtures this weekend may be rescheduled for a later date. Howe's pre-match press briefing was originally scheduled for 9am BST on Friday but has been postponed until 1:30pm BST.

Premier League chiefs are set to make an announcement on Friday morning, with calls scheduled with the Government in the early hours. The EFL have already confirmed Friday's Championship clash between Burnley and Norwich City has been postponed.

“Consideration in respect of EFL fixtures will be discussed with the Government and the wider sport sector during the period ahead and an appropriate announcement will be made at the earliest opportunity,” an EFL spokesperson said.

Newcastle Women went ahead with their Tyne-Tees derby on Thursday evening, emerging victorious over Middlesbrough Women. The club paid tribute to Her Majesty with a touching statement after the news of her passing broke.

"Newcastle United and its owners are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the club wrote. "We join the world in sending our deepest condolences to the Royal Family. All flags at St. James' Park will fly at half mast as we join the country in observing a period of national mourning."
