Eddie Howe's first words as Newcastle United head coach discusses his pride in role

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has spoken of the honour and pride he and his family feel after his appointment was confirmed.

Two weeks of speculation surrounding who would succeed Steve Bruce as head coach at St James' Park was finally brought to an end at 3pm on Monday afternoon as Howe's position was confirmed, with the former Bournemouth boss agreeing a deal that runs through to the end of the 2024 season.

While Amanda Staveley talked of Howe's passion and dynamism, the new boss was keen to highlight the pride he feels at taking over as head coach of the Magpies and the opportunity he's been given at such an exciting time for the club following the arrival of the new owners.

"It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family," explained Howe.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

"I would like to thank the club's owners for this opportunity and thank the club's supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together."
